There are two developments (OK, there are more, but one thing at a time) of interest in the cause of liberty this week. Consider this from Fox News:
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has passed a resolution declaring the National Rifle Association a ‘domestic terrorist organization’ and urged the federal government to do the same – the latest escalation in the heated rhetoric from Democratsregarding the NRA in the wake of several deadly mass shootings.
The resolution, which passed Tuesday and says the U.S. is ‘plagued by an epidemic of gun violence,’ accuses the NRA of using ‘its considerable wealth and organization strength to promote gun ownership and incite gun owners to acts of violence.’
And consider this from PJ Media:
It’s totally understandable that Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is touchy about gun violence in her city. The city is a shooting gallery with citizens little more than clay pigeons.
Last weekendwas a typical holiday weekend in Chicago: 7 dead, 41 shot. Lightfoot’s answer to the violence? More gun control, of course.
Sen. Ted Cruz made this point:
Lightfoot responded by claiming Republicans, and surrounding free states, are responsible for Chicago’s warzone-like murder rate.
Lightfoot’s incoherent rant contradicted the words of her own police chief:
‘We know who a lot of these people are. And how do we know that? Because we keep arresting them over and over and over and over and over again,’ Mr. Johnson said after a weekend in which 52 people were shot. ‘It’s just a vicious cycle. So until we hold violent offenders accountable in the way that they should be, we’re going to continue to see this.’
Well of course. One wouldn’t want a U.S. Senator having an opinion on such issues, would one? Who, after all, is he to criticize the self-imagined elite running Chicago? Actually, who does anyone have to be to criticize such corruptocrats? An American perhaps?
What’s going on here? Chicago’s Police Chief takes the bold, decidedly unwoke step of suggesting repeat, violent criminals ought to be behind bars, thinking, for some unfathomable reason, this might have some effect on violent crime, but Chicago’s mayor obviously doesn’t agree.
What’s at play here is that Democrat/Socialist/Communist policies are non-falsifiable. In science, every theory must be falsifiable. Better evidence must be able to disprove every theory, no matter how well accepted, and how long lived it might be. If that’s not the case, it’s not science. That’s why Climate Change hysteric’s cries of scientific “consensus” are nonsense. It doesn’t matter how many people raise their hands and claim to believe a theory, if it can’t be replicated, and if it can’t be falsified, it isn’t science, it’s a matter of political faith, which accurately describes D/S/C thinking.
D/S/C anti-liberty cracktivist articles of faith include:
1) Criminals aren’t responsible for their crimes;
2) Punishing them is somehow evil;
3) Keeping criminals in jail, particularly those of particular races, is somehow bad, so they must be released;
4) Only disarming the law-abiding can stop criminal violence;
5) Normal Americans are responsible for every failure of D/S/C policies, never the D/S/C faithful.
Whenever a D/S/C policy fails, as all inevitably must, they ignore the failure, deny that it has failed, or even explain that apparent failure is actually stunning success because their policies cannot possibly fail. Failure is explained away because the policy wasn’t in effect long enough for its wonders to become apparent (as in the Clinton “assault weapon” ban in effect for a mere ten years). Or not enough money was spent. Or the policy wasn’t forced down the throats of normal Americans good and hard enough. Or evil normal Americans were allowed to say mean things about the policy and otherwise resist the wisdom of their moral and intellectual betters. Or the policy wasn’t sufficiently restrictive/destructive of the liberty it targets. Or evil normal Americans were allowed to exist. Or circa 2019, TRUMP!
Thus in San Francisco, a city riven with self-inflicted terrors, which include medieval diseases and rampant crime, the NRA is of primary concern to local politicians. What relationship the NRA might possibly have to any local issue is an open question, but that’s San Francisco’s current priority, and they’re going to do their best to destroy the NRA–and normal American gun owners–for non-falsifiable reasons. In the meantime, San Franciscans dodge infected needles, wade in human urine and feces, and are victimized by brazen, addicted, insane, untouchable criminals, including many who shouldn’t be in the country in the first place.
Logic—reality—dictates the NRA exists not only to defend a fundamental, unalienable right, but to promote actual gun safety. In both roles, the NRA and its more than five millions members is without peer. That the NRA has never done anything to promote or inspire violence—quite the opposite—is irrelevant, because recognizing that reality would falsify various D/S/C policies and narratives. Also dangerous is the reality that violent crime has dropped to record lows, while the number of guns in private hands has simultaneously and dramatically increased. Deadly to D/S/C arguments is the fact that mass attacks continue to be, thankfully, rare. America is far—very far—from being the most violent nation, as this classic Bill Whittle video reveals.
But what about Chicago? Is Mayor Lightfoot correct, or is her Chief Of Police right? Is Chicago’s stratospheric violent crime and murder rate the fault of states not ruled by Democrats, states that actually recognize the Constitution and allow their citizens even more liberties than the federal Constitution provides?
This can only be true if D/S/C policies in Chicago and Illinois in general are non-falsifiable. Of the state/city governments in danger of bankruptcy, Illinois is in the top rank, as is Chicago. Crime is rampant in Chicago in part because its Democrat politicians have hamstrung the police as they coddle violent criminals. In Chicago, it is the law-abiding poor, particularly, that are unarmed and easy prey. Criminals will always have arms, and it doesn’t matter if they obtain them locally or elsewhere.
Lightfoot claims some 60% of all guns used in crimes came from outside Chicago. This statistic is almost surely false. The only way anyone could know this would be if it were possible to trace back every gun to it’s point of sale. Obviously, Chicago Police cannot possibly recover every gun ever used in a crime. For the guns they do recover, it would be necessary for the federal government to trace each one back to its original purchaser, something plainly impossible, and that information would only provide that narrow bit of data. A gun purchased in Wisconsin in 2000, could easily have been through multiple hands—lawfully–until it ended up in Illinois years later. One can be certain, however, that a great many guns used in crimes are stolen, criminals not being prone to obeying laws prohibiting thefts and burglaries. The origin of a firearm makes no difference to a victim or their survivors.
The argument, of course, is that if everywhere else had Chicago’s unconstitutional and abusive gun laws, Chicago wouldn’t be in competition with Baltimore as America’s murder capital. As always, D/S/C policies cannot possibly be at fault. The reality that Democrat-ruled cities with unconstitutional gun laws have outlandish rates of violent crime cannot possibly be a factor in the outlandish rates of violent crime in those cities. D/S/C policies cannot fail, therefore they do not fail, and when they do fail, everyone and everything else is to blame.
Life is easy if one can construct their own reality and force everyone else to live in it, until actual reality eventually, inevitably, catches up.
