Much has been written about the Democrats “Green New Deal” (available here).  Pushed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, joined by a great many other Dems, including a number running for the Democrat nomination for president, it is a virtual socialist wish list for seizing absolute power and wealth redistribution.  The Federalist explains:

It is not hyperbole to contend that GND is likely the most ridiculous and un-American plan that’s ever been presented by an elected official to voters. Not merely because it would necessitate a communist strongman to institute, but also because the societal cost are unfathomable. The risible historic analogies Markey and Ocasio-Cortez rely on, the building of the interstate highway system or moon landing, are nothing but trifling projects compared to a plan overhauls modernity by voluntarily destroying massive amounts of wealth and technology. That is the GND.

While some of the specifics need to be ironed out, the plan’s authors assure that this ‘massive transformation of our society’ needs some ‘clear goals and a timeline.’ The timeline is ten years. Here are some of the goals:

Why ten years? Because according to Rep. AOC (D-Bizarro World), without her brilliant environmental solutions, we have only 12 years until doomsday. And why is it those on the Left that profess to love America are always desperate to “fundamentally transform” it?

Ban affordable energy. GND calls for the elimination of all fossil fuel energy production, the lifeblood of American industry and life, which includes not only all oil but also natural gas — one of the cheapest sources of American energy, and one of the reasons the United States has been able to lead the world in carbon-emissions reduction.

This insanity alone would wreck the economy and impoverish all but the wealthiest willing to embrace tyranny, and of course, the political elite who would quickly become wealthy.

Eliminate nuclear energy. The GND also calls for eliminating all nuclear power, one of the only productive and somewhat affordable ‘clean’ energy sources available to us, in 11 years. This move would purge around 20 percent of American energy production so you can rely on intermittent wind for your energy needs.

The Left has always opposed nuclear energy, so this is hardly a surprise.  Wind and solar provide only a small portion of our national energy needs, and that intermittently at best.  The wind doesn’t always blow, and often when it does, not with sufficient velocity to produce electricity in usable quantities.  The sun doesn’t shine at least 50% of the time, and bad weather and cloud cover reduce even that.  In addition, solar infrastructure doesn’t last forever, frequently needs to be replaced, and is very expensive.  Snow is also a problem.

Eliminate 99 percent of cars. The authors state that the GND would like to replace every ‘combustion-engine vehicle’ — trucks, airplanes, boats, and 99 percent of cars — within ten years. Charging stations for electric vehicles will be built ‘everywhere.

Eliminate air travel. GND calls for building out ‘highspeed rail at a scale where air travel stops becoming necessary.’ Good luck Hawaii! {skip] Amtrak runs billions of dollars in the red (though, as we’ll see, trains will also be phased out).

And how is the model, California’s high-speed rail to nowhere working out?  It is now, after years of California and other self-imagined elite politicians declaring it the way of the future, being canceled:

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Tuesday he is pulling the plug on the state’s massive high-speed rail project from Los Angeles to San Francisco that was more than a decade behind schedule and billions in the red.

‘Let’s be real,’ Newsom said in his first State of the State address. ‘The current project, as planned, would cost too much and respectfully take too long. There’s been too little oversight and not enough transparency.

It’s unlikely the real extent of the wasted billions will ever be made public in a state ruled entirely by Democrats, but the cost overruns and delays–it was authorized in 2008–became too great even for them.  It had to be horrific beyond belief.

Beyond the economic wreckage wrought by devolving America to a pre-industrial state, the number of deaths this plan would cause cannot be easily quantified.  High-speed rail requires entirely different tracks and related infrastructure than our current rail network.  Thinking such a thing possible in a decade, even if there was enough money in the world to make it happen, is sheer lunacy.  Our daily lives work because we have a “just on time” system of delivering food, medicines, and most consumer goods to stores.  Remove motor vehicles, which carry most of the freight of all kinds, from the roadways, and millions will starve, and die from lack of medications. Just getting goods from the high-speed railheads, which don’t exist, and will never exist in every town, would be impossible. Eliminating air transport will have an identical effect, will bring trans-state and international business to a grinding halt, and will also contribute to the ever mounting death toll.

Electric vehicles do not have the range to power long-haul—or even short haul—trucks, and from where will come the power to charge this magical network of chargers?  How will they be distributed across the nation if there are no trucks to do it? And what about heavy construction equipment?  What will power that?  How do we build anything without it?

Oh, and what about our military?  Horses, carts and shoe leather?  Battery powered BB gun carrying drones?  What happens to national security—and world security—then?

Gut and rebuild every building in America. Markey and Cortez want to ‘retrofit every building in America’ with ‘state of the art energy efficiency.’ I repeat, ‘every building in America.’ That includes every home, factory, and apartment building, which will all need, for starters, to have their entire working heating and cooling systems ripped out and replaced with…well, with whatever technology Democrats are going invent in their committee hearings, I guess.

Will government pay for this?  Of course not.  It will simply mandate that all Americans do. Just as Obamacare forced men to pay for pregnancy care, the GND will force everyone to update their homes to lunatic, greenie wet dream standards.  Such retrofitting could easily cost more than an original mortgage.  Without reliable heating and cooling, millions will die.  But no worries.  The fatherland will provide:

A house. The GND promises that the government will provide, ‘safe, affordable, adequate housing’ for every American citizen.

One need only review the history of the Soviet Union to see the profusion and quality of this sort of housing, and how many families would have to live in a one bedroom apartment without running water or working toilets.  At least we won’t have to retrofit the houses we can no longer afford.

A government-guaranteed job. The bill promises the United States government will provide every single American with a job that includes a ‘family-sustaining wage, family and medical leave, vacations, and a pension.’ You can imagine that those left in the private sector would be funding these through some unspecified ‘massive’ taxation.

Unless the government takes total control of all businesses—which is surely their intention—this mandate will eliminate virtually all businesses and industries. This is nothing less than a communist power grab, and would surely be a fundamental transformation—from freedom and prosperity to tyranny and abject poverty.

Free education for life. GND promises free college or trade schools for every American.

And the point of this would be?  There will be no businesses, and the only jobs available will be government jobs that can’t even produce non-functional tractors.  They’d pollute too much, unless of course, they’re all battery powered, with charging stations on every glorious collective farm.  On the up side, the government would need well-indoctrinated commissars to send non-believers to the gulag and to staff the secret police. But even farms would be superfluous:

Bonus insanity: Ban meat. Ocasio-Cortez admits that we can’t get zero emissions in 10 years ‘because we aren’t sure that we’ll be able to fully get rid of farting cows and airplanes that fast.’ The only way to get rid of farting cows is to get rid of beef.

That’s right, gentle readers.  AOC is going to impoverish America and guide us to the glories of communism, and one of her major concerns is cow farts?!  Killing all cattle and other farting beings—hey, don’t we do that too?—would certainly reduce the number of mouths to feed, and a lack of protein would immediately have us all on the North Korean diet.  But that’s OK.  Without cows to graze on vegetation, we’ll have plenty for ourselves, for awhile, because we won’t have power to run pumps for irrigation.

A salubrious diet. The GND promises the government will provide ‘healthy food’ to every American (because there are no beans or lettuce in your local supermarket, I guess).

Guess who determines what “healthy food” might be?  And how is this healthy food going to make it to the local supermarket which closed because they couldn’t afford to pay government mandated wages and benefits?  And who, having no jobs and being taxed into oblivion, would be able to buy it, even if it did exist?

Free money. The GND aims to provide, and I am not making this up, ‘economic security’ for all who are ‘unable or unwilling’ to work. Just to reiterate: if you’re unwilling to work, the rest of us will have your back.

As with all communist societies, we will pretend to work, and the government will pretend to pay us.  And from where—who–will all this free money come? Us, but that’s a one time deal, because we’ll be unemployed. Taking government money from people who have no money for the government to take is a self-exterminating proposition.  Which leads to printing money that isn’t worth the paper and ink necessary to print it, and inflation numbers so huge as to have no meaning.  I love this:

The GND uses the word ‘massive’ to explain the size “investments” (formerly known as ‘taxes’) 13 times. How will we pay for this plan? ‘The same way we did the New Deal, the 2008 bank bailouts and extend quantitative easing,’ say Markey and Cortez, who earned her degree in economics at an institution of higher learning that should be immediately decertified.

It was Barack Obama who taught us the new definition of “investment”: unrestrained government spending based on confiscatory taxation. Initial estimates of the GND suggest it will cost at least $7 trillion dollars over a decade.  This is surely low.  the California high-speed rail boondoggle was only going to cost a fraction of what it is now projected to cost, and that price tag increases by the day.  But at least AOC is consistent.  We’ll just pay for it all, never mind the “how?”  That’s for small minded, non-visionary people—unlike her–who don’t have economics degrees.

For the moment, AOC and her eagerly socialistic supporters seem to be able to experience some small amount of shame and/or embarrassment.  She and they have been denying everything, admitting some of it, and trying to hide the rest.  The GND “Frequently Asked Questions” that appeared on her website, and was quickly deleted, may be found here.

AOC’s acolytes are now claiming the GND is merely “aspirational,” a harmless list of great deeds to which we can someday aspire, not anything anyone is suggesting we do now, you silly Republicans!  What we see here, gentle readers, is the communist future AOC and an increasing number of Democrats have in store for us.  They can’t impose it just yet, but it is a clear roadmap of their future intentions.  Most won’t vote for it openly, but like the communist Chinese, they take the long view, and will not rest until they seize sufficient power to implement this sort of despotic nsanity.

The difference is they will provoke the Second Civil War.  The good news is, when they do, they won’t be around for long.  My most recent articles on that topic are here, and here.

They will, at some point in the future, perhaps as early as 2020, seize power. Even if normal Americans would never vote for them, they’re working hard to illegally import people that will.  Their fraudulent voting efforts continue to bear fruit.  It won’t be long before votes are essentially irrelevant.  When that day arrives, the Green New Deal will be the least of our worries.
