Return with me now, gentle readers, to October of 2013, the last federal government shut down. Let us see how noble the motives of Democrats really are, then and now. Barack Obama ordered his minions to shut down specific facilities and monuments with the goal of inflicting as much pain on the American public as possible.  Just a few examples:

Park Service Ranger: ‘We’ve Been Told to Make Life As Difficult For People As We Can’“It’s a cheap way to deal with the situation,” an angry Park Service ranger in Washington says of the harassment. “We’ve been told to make life as difficult for people as we can. It’s disgusting.

Not every ranger or park employee enjoyed this, but some certainly did.

The World War II Memorial – The WWII memorial on the DC Mall is a 24/7 open-air memorial that is not regularly staffed. Although the White House must have known that WWII veterans in their eighties and nineties had already booked flights to visit this memorial, the White House still found the resources to spitefully barricade the attraction.

The Republican National Committee has offered to cover any costs required to keep the memorial open. The White House refused. Moreover, like the NIH, the GOP will pass a compromise bill that would fund America’s national parks. Obama has threatened to veto that bill.

Furloughed Military Chaplains Not Allowed to Work for Free – Furloughed military chaplains willing to celebrate Mass and baptisms for free have been told they will be punished for doing so.

So much for the Democrat’s appreciation of individual rights.

Obama Blacks Out Sports, Entertainment Programming to Overseas Troops – The American Forces Network (AFN) that provides American sports and entertainment programming to our troops stationed abroad, has been shut down. For some reason, though, AFN News will still broadcast news, just not any of the popular and fun stuff.

Camp David is essential, but popular programming for heroes overseas is non-essential.

They’re willing to defund our military in the current shutdown argument.

Obama Tries to Close Privately-Funded Mt. Vernon – Although George Washington’s Mt. Vernon estate is privately funded, the feds blocked visitors from entering the parking area because the Park Service maintains the lot. Apparently, the New Media publicity resulted in the feds backing down.

When you’re “sort of God,” public/private doesn’t matter.

Obama Tries to Close State-Run Parks in Wisconsin – “The park service ordered state officials to close the northern unit of the Kettle Moraine, Devil’s Lake, and Interstate state parks and the state-owned portion of the Horicon Marsh, but state authorities rebuffed the request because the lion’s share of the funding came from state, not federal coffers.

The same thing applies to federal/state.

Obama Blocks People From LOOKING at Mt. Rushmore – ‘Blocking access to trails and programs at South Dakota’s most popular attraction was one thing, but state officials didn’t expect Congress’ budget stalemate to shut down a view of Mount Rushmore.

‘The National Park Service placed cones along highway viewing areas outside Mount Rushmore this week, barring visitors from pulling over and taking pictures of the famed monument.

The cones first went up Oct. 1, said Dusty Johnson, Gov. Dennis Daugaard’s chief of staff. The state asked that they be taken down, and federal officials did so with some of them. The state was told the cones were a safety precaution to help channel cars into viewing areas rather than to bar their entrance.

I addressed this particular outrage in Mt. Rushmore’s Underwear.  What the article didn’t mention is rangers were ordered not to allow anyone to stop to take a photo or even look at the monument. This one is particularly vile:

Treatments for Children Suffering From Cancer – The GOP have agreed to a compromise by funding part of the government, including the National Institutes of Health, which offers children with cancer last-chance experimental treatment. Obama has threatened to veto this funding.

That doesn’t speak well of the vaunted Democrat concern for the helpless and downtrodden, does it gentle readers?  If a shutdown does occur, few, if any, Americans will notice it. Social security checks will still be sent, in full and on time, the military will still stand watch, only “non-essential” federal personnel will be sent home for what amounts to a paid vacation. When the shutdown ends, as they inevitably do, they’ll receive all back pay and benefits.

Democrats don’t care about the “Dreamers,” except, as usual, as abstractions and bloody political flags to wave. Republicans are willing to allow them to stay, but reasonably demand there be no more illegal immigrants. This would destroy Democrat’s plans to import permanent Democrat voters as a means of establishing a permanent Democrat majority. Democrats also don’t want to resolve the Dreamer issue. They want to keep them in limbo, using the issue as a cudgel with which to beat Republicans in 2018 and 2020.

Consider this from OMB Director Nick Mulvaney:

At an emergency press conference Friday morning, White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney said that OMB is preparing for ‘what we’re calling ‘The Schumer Shutdown.’ However, Mulvaney says the shutdown will not be as ‘impactful’ as the one in 2013 because the Obama administration ‘chose to make it worse’ for political reasons.

‘I’ve been through some of these before,’ he said. ‘The Democrats are opposing a bill that they don’t oppose! … They don’t oppose anything in the bill, but they are opposing the bill.’

‘I just want to let everybody know,’ he said about the potential government shutdown: ‘We do not want this, we do not want a shutdown, but if Mr. Schumer insists on it, he is in a position to force this on the American people.’ [skip]

The White House Budget Director continued: ‘From an OMB perspective because we are involved in managing a lapse or a shutdown, we want to make folks understand that it will look very different than it did under the previous administration. One of the things I’ve learned since I’ve been in this office is, there is no other way to describe it, but the Obama administration weaponized the shutdown of 2013. What they did not tell you is they did not encourage agencies to use carry-forward funds, funds that they were sitting on. Nor did they encourage agencies to use transfer authority. They could have made a shutdown in 2013 much less impactful, but they chose to make it worse. The only conclusion I can draw is they did it for political purposes. So it will look different this time around.

We can be assured President Trump will do nothing, as Mulvaney noted, to worsen the effects of any shutdown. He’ll do the opposite. Democrats think Republicans will be blamed for any and every shutdown. They can count on the Media to push that narrative, but Donald Trump’s election, and the willingness of Republicans to retire the Dreamer issue in favor of the so-called Dreamers, just might change that calculus.

The weakness of the Democrat’s position this time around is revealed by their contention that because president Trump may have said “shithole” in a private meeting, that so upsets the tender sensibilities of Democrats, it renders bipartisan agreement absolutely impossible. Were the occasional crudity uttered by a politician actually so apocalyptic, the nation would have crumbled not long after its founding.  A small portion of the total of Chuck Schumer’s barbaric behavior may be found here.

Still, Republicans aren’t called the Stupid Party for nothing, and while one can always count on Democrats to work against the interests of Americans, one can always count on Republicans to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
