The Clinton magic touch continues to corrupt everything and everyone it touches. Add in Anthony Weiner, and the situation becomes utterly ludicrous. At the moment, I cannot make any predictions with certainty, but I can at least make some educated guesses about what is happening, and what might happen. But first, the story, from Fox News:
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton called on the FBI Friday to release all information in its renewed investigation into her use of a private server while secretary of state after discovering new emails – apparently during the probe of former Rep. Anthony Weiner’s sexting – in a stunning turn of events just days before the presidential election.
[FBI Director James Comey] himself has said he doesn’t know whether the emails … are significant or not,’ Clinton told reporters in Iowa Friday evening. ‘I’m confident whatever they are will not change the conclusion reached in July. Therefore it’s imperative that the bureau explain this issue in question, whatever it is, without any delay.
It’s unlikely Comey would have taken this extraordinary step without knowledge the “new” evidence was obviously highly incriminating, and/or would most likely blow up in the FBI’s face. Of course, the situation wouldn’t be quite so extraordinary if Comey hadn’t thrown away his, and the FBI’s, integrity in favor of the favor of the Clintons.
Earlier Friday, Comey informed top members of Congress in a letter that the bureau had ‘learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation.”
An FBI source, though, confirmed to Fox News that the new emails were discovered after the bureau seized devices belonging to disgraced ex-Rep. Weiner and his wife Huma Abedin, a top Clinton aide who recently announced she was separating from the former congressman. The New York Times first reported on the Weiner investigation connection, noting the FBI had been probing texts Weiner sent to a 15-year-old girl.
Just a reminder: Huma Abedin has, for many years, been joined at the hip with Hillary Clinton. This is particularly disturbing in that she and her immediate family have direct and long-standing ties with some of the worst Islamists on the planet.
Trump, speaking to cheering supporters Friday afternoon in Manchester, N.H., praised the FBI for having the ‘courage’ to ‘right the horrible mistake that they made’ – saying he hopes that is ‘corrected.
I’m not at all sure this move represents courage. Ass covering, certainly.
Hillary Clinton’s corruption is on a scale we have never seen before,’ Trump said. ‘We must not let her take her criminal scheme into the Oval Office.
I am sure Trump is right about that.
The FBI’s decision to reopen its investigation into Secretary Clinton reinforces what the House Judiciary Committee has been saying for months: the more we learn about Secretary Clinton’s use of a private email server, the clearer it becomes that she and her associates committed wrongdoing and jeopardized national security,’ House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., said in a statement.
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said the discovery must be ‘serious’ for the bureau to investigate this close to the election.
However, daily revelations from hacked Clinton campaign emails obtained by WikiLeaks have become a headache for the Democrat’s campaign. The resumption of the FBI probe poses a potentially bigger problem.
Ron Hosko, former assistant director of the FBI, told Fox News in a telephone interview that retired FBI officials were “livid” at Comey over the fact that charges were not brought against Clinton in round one of the investigation. [skip]
House Speaker Paul Ryan called the FBI decision ‘long overdue.’
It is possible James Comey, Loretta Lynch, Barack Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton badly underestimated the backlash from honest FBI agents when he cut the legs of their case out from under them. Every indication from active and retired agents–the Bureau has a strong, influential and active association of retired agents–is Comey is a pariah within the FBI. Consider too the recent revelation that Clinton ally and Virginia Governor Terry McAuliff, used his political action committee to pour $675,000 into the Virginia state senate run of Jill McCabe in 2015. McCabe’s husband, Andrew, was then in charge of the Washington DC office of the FBI. He was in charge of the Hillary Clinton investigation, and within a bit more than a year, was promoted to the #2 position in the FBI: Deputy Director. Jill McCabe lost her senate race. Clinton also participated in McCabe’s election race, making a personal appearance at one campaign event, at least.
Coming on the tail of Comey’s cowardly and obviously political salvation of Hillary Clinton, the revelation about McCabe–who apparently did not recuse himself from the Clinton investigation–would easily cause honest agents, as Hosko noted, to be livid. “Bad optics” doesn’t begin to adequately describe it.
So what happened? Is the situation as it has been described? Did FBI agents, entirely by accident in the investigation of the sexting of Carlos Danger–Weiner’s sexting name–seize multiple electronic devices from Weiner and Huma Abedin and found incriminating information relating to Hillary Clinton therein? Let’s assume, for the sake of argument, that’s what happened. It is possible.
Let’s further assume the information, after cursory examination, appears to be evidence of obvious and voluminous crimes. Would that be enough to cause Comey to turn 180°? Unlikely. That would require he have the kind of integrity that would never have allowed him to rescue Clinton in the first place. He admitted then she committed multiple crimes, but lied, claiming proving those crimes required specific criminal intent. The statues involved require no such thing. Considering the status quo, why not just suppress this information too?
Did Comey, then, discover new integrity? Was he under such brutal pressure within the FBI he was encouraged to take advantage of this situation to try to salvage something for himself? Or perhaps he is so altruistic as to try to salvage the FBI’s integrity, but then we return to the problem of him throwing that integrity away so blithely in the first place.
The cynical argument goes something like this: When his agents, his very, very angry and disgusted agents, came up with even more compelling evidence of multiple felonies, Comey was in real trouble. He and McCabe were surely getting the clear message the rank and file FBI wouldn’t keep quiet, and would act to restore what integrity they could. Comey violated the honor of the FBI, the FBI would break ranks and make him pay. The little people just might raise enough stink to make their betters stand up and take notice.
No doubt, Lynch, Obama and Clinton–surely you, gentle readers, don’t think Comey failed to fill them in?–reassured Comey, promising to keep him in this job and protect him. If Comey isn’t a complete idiot, he must know as soon as it’s politically advantageous for them, they’ll throw him under the campaign bus. That’s the way the Democrat game is played.
Comey’s only chance to salvage any integrity, and to remain in his position, would be to take the actions he has taken. It would be more difficult for Obama to dismiss him as he courageously leads the investigation. Not much, but a little more.
At the same time, Comey knows, without a doubt, the Lynch DOJ will never indict Hillary Clinton. Remember what they did in the initial investigation. They gave immunity to everyone and their dog and apparently got nothing in return. They not only agreed not to really search laptop computers for evidence, but agreed to destroy that evidence when they were done with their pathetically shallow searches. Coincidentally, this would deny the evidence on those computers to the Congress. They refused to call a grand jury, and did not seek subpoenas or common search warrants to seize evidence. This was not an investigation; it was a Clinton pep rally. They even allowed Cheryl Mills, one of the principal suspects, to serve as a lawyer for Clinton during her faux interview.
Comey also knows if Clinton is elected, she will be likely to keep him around, for at least awhile, to claim she is not above the law. Comey can be relatively secure in this in that he knows, again, without any doubt, Barack Obama will pardon Clinton and anyone else that can cause her–and him–any harm, before she takes office. Various talking heads are horrified at the probability that if Clinton is elected, she would be indicted while in office. Not a chance.
I’ve even heard some supposed Republicans suggesting if Trump is elected, he must pardon Clinton for the good of the nation. It would certainly be good for the political establishment.
In fact, Comey may very well be counting on this. With pardons, he can throw up his hands and claim he did everything he could to uphold the rule of law. “Hey, what you gonna do? Obama pardoned them! I tried; I really tried!”
We should also keep in mind the immunity deals given Clinton’s cronies may very well make successful prosecutions difficult or impossible. That may have been the point.
There are many possibilities. We’re making the assumption the evidence relates only to Clinton’s unlawful use of e-mails and the unlawful exposure of classified documents. Considering the nature of the Clinton Foundation, and of Mrs. Clinton’s pay for play term as Secretary of State, it is entirely possible far more serous crimes are involved, up to and including treason, which once upon a time was an actual capital crime. It’s hard to imagine Washington wimps to push for a death sentence for a minor crime like betraying the nation. Of course, Clinton has a great deal of experience in that area. If FBI agents were holding evidence of crimes of that level involving not only Clinton, but other high level officials, perhaps including Barack Obama, Comey might be desperately trying to release the pressure before the bomb blows, catching him–and a great many others–in the blast radius. His reputation is already shredded. Perhaps he’s trying to save at least a shred of integrity for a legacy?
Or maybe Comey actually has a conscience? In the Beltway? Unlikely.
The next eleven days will tell us if half of America is more than willing to put a serial liar and criminal, a woman who has already destroyed nations, enabled the deaths of thousands of foreign citizens, and the deaths of Americans, in the White House. It will also tell us if even a semblance of the rule of law still exists, and whether the rule of law is still cherished by enough of the American people to preserve the Republic.
One final thought: It must be absolutely clear, even to the most rabid partisan, that Hillary Clinton is the most obvious and vulnerable blackmail target in world history.
UPDATE: 10-30-16, 1415 CST: Fox News is now reporting that Anthony Weiner is not only cooperating with the FBI, but gave the laptop in question–there may be more electronic devices than that–to the FBI, giving them permission to search it. The Clinton camp is trying to distance themselves from that laptop, claiming it belongs to Wiener and Huma Abedin–who is in hiding–“rarely” used it and has no idea what might be on it. Clinton Campaign Manager Robby Mook, on Fox News Sunday, claimed Clinton–and by implication, no one else in the campaign–has asked Abedin what might be on the laptop.
If you believe that, gentle readers, I’m the 1982 winner of the Miss Universe competition and Donald Trump pinched my bottom! I still have his fingerprints on my left cheek! Really!
This raises another very interesting possibility. If we take the Clinton claim that Abedin rarely used that laptop and has no idea what’s on it, wouldn’t it be interesting if Wiener has been saving all the classified information Abedin brought home, as well as all the incriminating information she brought home on other devices, and saving it for a rainy day? Seeing his marriage, and hence all possible political protection, evaporating, might not a man of Wiener’s lack of integrity seek something hot to trade for avoiding prison?
One other thought: FBI Director James Comey promised the Congress he would notify them if the investigation into Clinton was reopened. If this turns out to be a dry hole. If there is really nothing new or significant involved, Comey’s reputation–what little remains–and future employment opportunities are going to deflate faster than Wiener’s wiener in the face of an FBI investigation.
