It’s interesting how seemingly unrelated events occur in close order, like sneezes rapidly occurring in groups of three. In the case of Barack Obama, such coincidences are often revealing of his true beliefs and tendencies. The seemingly unrelated events this time are a question by a crank–perhaps a plant?–at a Donald Trump “Townhall” event, and the idiotic overreaction of a Texas school to a student bringing a homemade clock to school. How are these events related and revealing of Mr. Obama? What is the common factor? Islam.
Consider this from Paul Mirengoff at Powerline:
Donald Trump’s traveling circus came to Rochester, New Hampshire today. During the Q&A session, the following exchange occurred:
TRUMP: Let’s start with this group right over here. Come on. This man, I like this guy.
MAN: We have a problem in this country, it’s called Muslims. We know our current president is one. You know he’s not even an American–
TRUMP: –We need this question [laughter]–
MAN: But anyway, we have training camps brewing where they want to kill us. That’s my question, when can we get rid of it?
TRUMP: We’re going to be looking at a lot of different things. A lot of people are saying that, a lot of people are saying bad things are happening out there. We’re going to be looking into that and plenty of other things.
Trump is under fire for not challenging the preamble to the question — the attack on American Muslims generally and the claims President Obama is a Muslim and not an American. It is said that he “let the comment slide.” Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who must be freaking out at the number of Americans watching the Republican debates, tried to tar the GOP through Trump’s exchange with the crackpot.
This exchange has provoked the expected outrage by the media, Democrats (but I repeat myself) and the other usual suspects against Trump, conservatives, and anyone else they don’t appreciate. Mirengoff sort of plays along observing that Trump wasn’t taking the man seriously, but ending by suggesting that Trump should have been politically correct and defended Mr. Obama’s honor (by all means, take the link and read the whole thing).
It’s also a bit hypocritical to profess outrage at the idea that Mr. Obama is a Muslim (particularly since he is). After all, hasn’t he gone out of his way to repeatedly claim Muslims are loyal Americans and Islam is just another religion, part of the grand American salad bowl?
The ultimate problem with this is that questions remain about whether Mr. Obama is a Muslim, and whether he was actually born a foreign national, questions he significantly fueled by spending more than a million dollars stonewalling release of his birth certificate, which, when released, may have had a number of irregularities. One thing, however, is indisputable, Barack Obama is a Muslim, at least to every faithful Muslim, as I wrote in 2013
From time to time, earnest pundits suggest that President Barack Hussein Obama is Muslim. Those unfortunates are uniformly and immediately shouted down and demonized for daring to make such an obviously impolitic assertion, but the issue will simply not go away, in large part because Mr. Obama so often says and does things that cause reasonable people to wonder.[skip]
Americans are reasonably suspicious of Mr. Obama’s motives in that he seems to waste no opportunity to assist and prop up Muslim regimes that are overtly hostile to America and American interests. Yet he simultaneously distances America from Israel–our only democratic ally in the Middle East–and attacks domestic Christianity, as in his most recent hostility to religious liberty on several fronts, including forcing church-affiliated hospitals and charities to provide contraceptive and abortion services in insurance provided for employees. [skip]
Is Barack Hussein Obama a Muslim? Mr. Obama has repeatedly claimed that he is Christian by choice. Americans routinely take people at their word on such matters, but Americans are free to change churches and religions at will. The world’s observant Muslims have quite a different take on this issue.
There is no question that Mr. Obama was born to a Muslim father. It is not only a matter of record, but Mr. Obama has admitted it in writing and in multiple interviews and speeches. In addition, despite progressives–and some Muslims–crying discrimination and racism when Mr. Obama’s middle name is mentioned, he has often traded on that name–and his self-confessed affinity for Islam–when he has considered it advantageous. The fact remains that only Muslim children are [commonly] named ‘Hussein.’ He was Mohammed’s grandson and is revered in Islam as a holy martyr. On his school enrollment forms in Indonesia, the young Obama was recorded as a Muslim. This is unsurprising as the children of a Muslim father are themselves Muslims; it is not a matter of choice, nor may one choose to leave Islam. Those who do become apostates and Islam dictates but one fate for apostates: death. That most Muslims would not try to kill an apostate speaks well of their individual character, but millions would, which speaks to the dictates of their faith and their willingness to follow it to the letter.
Mr. Obama may claim any faith he chooses and many Americans will accept that—as long as there is not convincing evidence to the contrary—but the world’s Muslims are a different story. This would seem to make Mr. Obama’s belief in his ability to engage and persuade the Muslim world naïve in the extreme. The leader of the “Great Satan,” who also happens to be a self-proclaimed apostate is unlikely to be well received or convincing, and his open, extended hand will most likely be met only with a clenched fist, as has been the case to date. His initiatives to the Iranians, Palestinians, Libyans, Syrians and Egyptians, for example, have been abject failures and have arguably made things worse. In fact, many devout Muslims—and surely all Islamists—would feel a religious obligation to kill Mr. Obama for his apostasy alone.
The indisputable facts of Mr. Obama’s birth would tend to make the faux outrage over the mere suggestion that Mr. Obama is Muslim look like what it is: a lie. As to his birth nationality, I suspect that one day, that too will be definitively answered. For the moment, most Americans may choose to accept Mr. Obama’s profession of Christianity, but the world’s Muslims, if they knew the circumstances of his birth, would not.
Consider too, this from Kevin Williamson at National Review:
Ahmed Mohamed is a human Rorschach test. Look at that face and tell me what you see: Muslim-American? African-American? I myself see something very familiar: Nerd-American.
Mohamed, a 14-year-old high-school freshman in Texas and the son of an immigrant family from Sudan, is a cause célèbre just at the moment because he was handcuffed, frog-marched out of a classroom, and arrested for the crime of showing off his technological chops by building an electronic clock and bringing it to school to show his engineering teacher. (Let us now praise MacArthur High School in Irving, Texas, for the fact that 14-year-olds there have engineering teachers.) Apparently, an English teacher — it had to be an English teacher — thought the device looked like a bomb.
It didn’t. But it looked a hell of a lot more like a bomb than that half-eaten Pop-Tart in the possession of that seven-year-old in Maryland looked like a gun, yet the child was suspended; it was surely more reasonable to think that those circuit boards constituted a bomb than to think that the bang-bang! hand gesture of a ten-year-old in Milford, Mass., constituted a serious threat to shoot somebody; taking a high-school kid into custody after a teacher reports a possible bomb threat is surely no more irrational than arresting an eighth-grader over an NRA T-shirt.
Mohamed’s father says that his son was mistreated because the incident happened a few days after the annual commemoration of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks, and because his name is Mohamed. The story immediately became ubiquitous not because of what actually happened — boneheaded as that was — but because it can be used to further a story that the media already want to tell: that the United States is morally corrupt and irredeemably racist; that Muslims are under siege; that “white privilege” blinds the majority of Americans to the corruption at the heart of everything red, white, and blue. Muslim kid meets paranoia in Texas is A-1 copy; NRA-wearing kid meets paranoia in West Virginia, not so much.
I have frequently written about the panicky, irrational overreactions of school officials reverting to mindless zero tolerance policies. And I take mild offense at Williamson’s disparagement of English teachers. I certainly would have examined the device for any sign of explosives, but then I know what most forms of explosives look like, and admittedly, most English teachers don’t, so I suppose I can’t be too miffed.
My PJ Media article of a few years ago is illustrative of the unfortunate zero tolerance tendency.
It doesn’t take much research to discover that young Mohamed’s difficulties had nothing whatever to do with his faith, name or national origin, but with adult stupidity. Take the case of a five-year old girl, as I noted in the PJ Media article:
(2) Place: Mount Carmel Area School District, Pennsylvania
Tiny Terrorist: A five year-old girl (kindergartener)
Punishment: 10-day suspension for making a ‘terroristic threat’
Facts: The girl told a classmate she wanted to ‘shoot’ her and herself with a ‘Hello Kitty’ bubble gun, a tiny, pink, cartoon ray-gun shaped bubble blower. She was searched, but left the ‘gun’ at home. She was hectored in front of her class by the teacher and threatened with arrest.
Apparently little white, probably Christian girls can also find themselves on the wrong side of zero tolerance policies when non-existent threats take hold in the fevered, panicky brains of some educators. Islam has nothing to do with it, not that Mr. Obama would miss an opportunity to rub American’s collective faces in Islam. Williamson again:
You cannot very well go actively cultivating an atmosphere of paranoia and then pronounce yourself surprised by all the paranoia in the air. President Barack Obama, never one to miss an opportunity for cheap moral preening, invited Mohamed to the White House. That’s an interesting gesture: Anybody want to hazard a guess as to what would happen if a young man showed up at the White House visitors’ center with a backpack in which was a homemade device full of circuit boards joined to a timing device? I do not frequent the White House, but I often am in the House and Senate office buildings in Washington, and my best guess is that if I’d tried to bring Mohamed’s clock into one of those places, there would have been guns drawn.
In Mohamed’s case, rationality did eventually prevail and there were no charges and no permanent consequences at school, however, there should have been no consequences at all. Perhaps we can give the teacher the benefit of the doubt, but there is the nagging issue of Mohamed apparently clearly identifying the device as a clock he built, and making no claim it was a bomb. The principals involved presumably had greater leisure to carefully examine the device and the incident and should have known better. The police absolutely should have known better and should never have handcuffed and attested Mohamed. I wonder what they considered probable cause for arrest? In every account I’ve been able to find, none was apparent.
The larger question remains: why has Mr. Obama invited Mohamed—and surely his Muslim parents—to the White House? There have been hundreds, perhaps thousands, of kids mistakenly and foolishly harassed, mistreated, arrested, suspended from school, and in some cases, actually prosecuted for no rational reason. For them, not so much as a phone call or a self-referential mention in an Obama speech.
Some are already suggesting that Mr. Obama has done it to honor a young man who may have a bright future as a scientist, and so he’s invited to the White House because Mr. Obama always invites bright youngsters that might have bright futures as scientists to the White House, except that he doesn’t. Perhaps he’s doing it because of the trauma suffered by the young innocent? Mr. Obama wants to comfort them and reassure them they are not alone in their suffering? Unfortunately, Mr. Obama’s rare moments of “comforting” tend to involve our enemies or are photo ops designed to humanize Mr. Obama. Considering the trauma suffered by the families of our wounded and killed military members and police officers, none of whom are being invited to the White House for reassurance, that’s probably not it either.
Once again—still–the common factor is Islam and Mr. Obama’s inexplicable, considering he is a self-identified Christian, compulsion to defend and exalt Islam at every opportunity, such as this example from a 2013 article where the new head of NASA was explaining the new, primary focus—as told to him by Mr. Obama—of NASA:
So you see, gentle readers, it’s actually the mission of NASA not to explore space, but to make Muslims feel good about ‘their historic contribution to science and engineering — science, math and engineering (it’s apparently so important, they intend to do it twice).’ This is a good thing, because many Muslim nations, particularly those that actually closely follow the nuts and bolts of their faith, can’t manufacture so much as a toaster, to say nothing of contributing to a space program, so they don’t have much to feel good about regarding the present. But then again, if the American space program consists of making Muslims feel good about their history, that’s not such a hindrance. After all, there isn’t much to which to contribute, is there? This is probably a good thing. I wouldn’t want the average jihadist in a cramped spacecraft on the way to Mars with me. Actually, I’m a little uncomfortable with the average jihadist on the same continent.
Perhaps when a Muslim nation produces a space toaster, NASA will let up know. As you can see, gentle readers, there does appear to be a coincidental science connection to Mr. Obama’s upcoming “America loves Islam” photo op after all. But Barack Obama is not a Muslim, absolutely not, and how dare anyone so much as suggest such vile calumny!
Interesting addition–and perhaps motivation for the White House invitation–to the story from Mark Steyn:
…the 14-year old all-American schoolboy clockmaker who didn’t make a clock at all and is the son of a belligerent Muslim activist and perennial Sudanese presidential candidate whose brother runs a trucking company amusingly called Twin Towers Transportation…
“Twin Towers Transportation.” Oh, that’s charming. I don’t suppose it would make any difference to the Obama White House even if they knew about it…
Second interesting addition which suggests, rather convincingly, that young Mr. Mohamed didn’t actually create a clock at all. Notice in the photo that the “clock/bomb” is rather conspicuously lacking one vital element: any sign of explosives. By all means, take the link. If the author is correct, faking it is an even more compelling reason for Mr. Obama to honor the young man at the White House. It’s the precedent established by his honoring of the Bergdahls, you know/
