RAMclr-052115-success-IBD-COLOR-FINAL.jpg.cms_There are, in this fallen world, enemies that are immune to logic and reasoning. There is no diplomacy, no dialogue, no discussion that can encourage them to change their minds or their ways. Reality does not matter, because they are continuously creating their own reality on the way to creating a utopia. Oh, they’ll sometimes call for an “honest dialogue” with their opponents, but what they mean is “you accept our premise from the start and shut up while we tell you what you’re going to do.”

One vicious enemy of the United States, of liberty and republican democracy, is progressives, led–fecklessly and chaotically–by President Barack Obama. How can I say that? How can I accuse a substantial portion of the American public of being the enemies of America? Remember, if you will, Mr. Obama, then a candidate for president, calling America the greatest nation in the world one second, and the next, swearing to fundamentally transform it. And what President of the United States dedicated to the United States would do everything he could to ensure our most virulent enemy, an enemy that swears daily to destroy America and Israel, would get nuclear weapons.

Progressives, of course, cannot acknowledge or agree with anything I’m about to say, but I’m sure they’d like to “dialogue” with me about it.

Progressives, leftists, Marxists, communists, socialists, liberals–and Islamists–you name them, they’re all the same, are separated only by who they’re willing to imprison, brutalize, murder, and how many and how soon on their way to establishing their version of utopia. They embrace their ideology with the fervor of the most radical religionists. They tend to reject Christianity or other faiths as they are commonly understood, and when they profess a faith, they warp it away from the Bible toward their political ideology, which is their true faith.

For such people, progressive ideology can never be falsified; it can never be proved wrong. No matter what happens, those events and circumstances must argue for progressive ideology, even when they are in direct opposition. When some progressive policy–Detroit, for example–utterly fails as such policies inevitably must fail, that failure can never be the fault of progressives or progressive policy. To whatever degree failure is acknowledged at all, it is done only to blame others or to demand even more progressivism. Detroit failed because republicans–or any ideology other than progressivism–are allowed to exist, and evil republicans are keeping progressivism from working its magic. Detroit failed because there has been insufficient time for progressivism to succeed. Detroit failed because insufficient money has been spent. It failed because insufficient wealth has been redistributed to the right progressive wizards and victim groups.

Margaret Thatcher was right: the trouble with socialism is you always run out of other people’s money, not that socialists are much bothered by this. After all, it’s other people’s money.

And so we have Barack Obama lecturing to the recent graduation of the officers of the US Coast Guard Academy on the most serious threat to American national security:

As a nation, we face many challenges, including the grave threat of terrorism.  And as Americans, we will always do everything in our power to protect our country.  Yet even as we meet threats like terrorism, we cannot, and we must not, ignore a peril that can affect generations.

Now, I know there are still some folks back in Washington who refuse to admit that climate change is real.  And on a day like today, it’s hard to get too worried about it.  There are folks who will equivocate. They’ll say, “You know, I’m not a scientist.”  Well, I’m not either.  But the best scientists in the world know that climate change is happening.  Our analysts in the intelligence community know climate change is happening.  Our military leaders — generals and admirals, active duty and retired — know it’s happening.  Our homeland security professionals know it is happening.  And our Coast Guard knows it’s happening.

The science is indisputable.  The fossil fuels we burn release carbon dioxide, which traps heat.  And the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are now higher than they have been in 800,000 years.  The planet is getting warmer.  Fourteen of the 15 hottest years on record have been in the past 15 years. Last year was the planet’s warmest year ever recorded.

Our scientists at NASA just reported that some of the sea ice around Antarctica is breaking up even faster than expected.  The world’s glaciers are melting, pouring new water into the ocean.  Over the past century, the world sea level rose by about eight inches.  That was in the last century; by the end of this century, it’s projected to rise another one to four feet.

Cadets, the threat of a changing climate cuts to the very core of your service.  You’ve been drawn to water -— like the poet who wrote, “the heart of the great ocean sends a thrilling pulse through me.”  You know the beauty of the sea, but you also know its unforgiving power.

Here at the Academy, climate change — understanding the science and the consequences — is part of the curriculum, and rightly so, because it will affect everything that you do in your careers.  Some of you have already served in Alaska and aboard icebreakers, and you know the effects.  As America’s Maritime Guardian, you’ve pledged to remain always ready — Semper Paratus — ready for all threats.  And climate change is one of those most severe threats.

And this is not just a problem for countries on the coasts, or for certain regions of the world.  Climate change will impact every country on the planet.  No nation is immune.  So I’m here today to say that climate change constitutes a serious threat to global security, an immediate risk to our national security.  And make no mistake, it will impact how our military defends our country.  And so we need to act — and we need to act now.

I’ll not fisk the innumerable misstatements of fact and the outright lies in Mr. Obama’s commentary. Should you be interested, you can surely find the truth (Watts Up With That is one of the finest sources).   This article may be particularly helpful. I’ll even ignore the fact that any American should be horrified that in a world engulfed in flames lit by Mr. Obama’s progressive idiocy and fecklessness, he would think climate change to be our most serious national security concern.

Climate change–previously known as global warming until none occurred for nearly two decades in direct contradiction to all the warmist’s computer models and projections–is the perfect ideological companion for progressivism. Here’s why:

(1) It is non-falsifiable. No matter what happens, climate change is the cause. Melting ice at the poles? Climate change. Increasing ice at the poles? Climate change. Drowning polar bears? Climate change. Ooops. Polar bears regularly swimming hundreds of miles? Climate change. More hurricanes? Climate change. Fewer hurricanes than normal? Climate change. Because it is a matter of progressive faith, it can never be disproved.

(2) It is a never-ending alarmist scenario. Because any weather is caused by climate change, it is an eternal money-making scenario and political cudgel with which to beat republicans. Oppose climate change policy? You want to destroy the planet! It is a bottomless money pit. No matter how much money is spent, more will be required.

(3) It demands more and more virulent progressivism. Climate change can be combatted only with more progressive policy.

(4) It is the perfect wealth distribution justification and vehicle. Solar panels? Windmills? Electric vehicles? All must be funded with trillions to save the planet. That none, even all together, can have any effect on the climate, ever, means nothing. The point is to send huge amounts of other people’s money to progressive backers, who will in turn give huge amounts to progressive politicians.

(5) It gives government, run by progressives, unlimited justification to increase governmental power and to diminish individual liberty.

To imagine that we can change the climate is the height of hubris. What, exactly, will the trillions warmists want to spend accomplish? Even the UN’s climate panel has admitted that if they got every penny they wanted, it might–might–change the global temperature by something less than a single degree in the foreseeable future. Maybe. Are we going to move the sun to cool the Earth? Stop all hurricanes? Abolish, through well-meaning legislation, tornadoes? We could build the Six Million Dollar Man (probably 20 trillion in current dollars); do we have the technology to do as Mr. Obama said he would do upon his acceptance of the Democrat nomination for president: heal the planet and stop the rise of the seas?

What needs to be “healed” anyway? Detroit? Baltimore? Fill in the Grand Canyon?

We are led by a megalomaniacal narcissist who is far more concerned with his legacy and with keeping progressive coffers overflowing than with preserving American national security, power, and ability to influence world events. If America fails, western civilization fails and the world will be plunged into millennia of darkness. But at least the world might be less than a degree warmer in the next century.
