On December 27, 2014, I published an article titled “The Attorney General’s Report On The Anytown Elementary Terrorist Attack.” It was a fictional account of an organized terror attack on an elementary school set in the near future, during the first term of the Hillary Clinton Administration.
The good folks at The Truth About Guns have been kind enough to pick up that article and reprint it under the title: It’s Happened Before, It Will Happen Again. As regular readers know, one of my continuing worries, as an educator, veteran and former police officer is the fact that few places in America are as a soft a target for domestic killers and terrorists as America’s schools, and elementary schools, populated almost entirely by female teachers and young children, are the softest of soft targets. Even so, politicians and school administrators continue to place their faith in small, metal “Gun Free School Zone” signs, and “run and hide” drills, all the while proclaiming that the safety of children is their first concern.
For those that have not read the story, it is based entirely in reality and the capabilities, or lack thereof, of most local American police forces. In fact, everything in the story has been done by terrorists and it reflects common terrorist weapons and tactics. Also interesting are the comments. Some readers found the story too long, others were apparently stymied by a greater than elementary school reading level. Some were critical, while admitting they hadn’t bothered to read the article.
Self-deception and denial of reality are far too easy.
I hope the article is not prophetic. I fear it’s only a matter of time. I also fear that if it does happen, it won’t be enough for our politicians and school administrators to lose faith in small, colorful pieces of sheet metal. If you have a few minutes, it may be worth your time.
