By now, most Americans have heard of the tragic story of Veronica Rutledge, the young mother whose 2 year-old son somehow managed to take her handgun from a purse designed for concealed carry and shoot her in the head while they were shopping in a WalMart. As one might expect, the usual suspects immediately began dancing on her grave, demanding gun control, and not a few advocates of the Second Amendment were less than kind in extracting lessons–as usual as they may be–from her death.
At The Truth About Guns, my article on that incident, and its implications for self-government, is now up. If you have a few minutes, it may be worth your time.
C’mon Mike start digging, this is a load of ‘old Mother Hubbard’. A two year old offs its mother in Walmart! That’s BULLSHIT!
17?????? will be on to this like a dog on a bone and I will be very distressed.
Mike it sounds to me like she was very negligent in the way that she stored her gun in the purse.
I wonder how it was that a child of 2 could have possibly managed to have been so accurate with his shot….
….. what is the rest of this story?
Dear Aussie:
I’m not sure this was an entirely foreseeable matter. I’ve been unable to find any additional information as to the mechanics of the shot. It appears, from what we know, to have been one of those freak accidents where multiple horrific factors had to perfectly align at just the right moment to cause the final outcome.
I agree it was unforseen, and I wonder if anyone will be able to give the full details.
