“Government exists to protect us from each other. Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves.“

POINT: From Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit (09-15-12):
WHY BARACK OBAMA SHOULD RESIGN. Just for the record, this is what it looked like for a man who made a film that made the Obama Administration uncomfortable: Here’s the key bit: “Just after midnight Saturday morning, authorities descended on the Cerritos home of the man believed to be the filmmaker behind the anti-Muslim movie that has sparked protests and rioting in the Muslim world.”
When taking office, the President does not swear to create jobs. He does not swear to ‘grow the economy.’ He does not swear to institute ‘fairness.’ The only oath the President takes is this one:
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
By sending — literally — brownshirted enforcers to engage in — literally — a midnight knock at the door of a man for the non-crime of embarrassing the President of the United States and his administration, President Obama violated that oath. You can try to pretty this up (It’s just about possible probation violations! Sure.), or make excuses or draw distinctions, but that’s what’s happened. It is a betrayal of his duties as President, and a disgrace.
He won’t resign, of course. First, the President has the appreciation of free speech that one would expect from a Chicago Machine politician, which is to say, none. Second, he’s not getting any pressure. Indeed, the very press that went crazy over Ari Fleischer’s misrepresented remarks seems far less interested in the actions of an administration that I repeat, literally sent brown-shirted enforcers to launch a midnight knock on a filmmaker’s door.
But Obama’s behavior — and that of his enablers in the press — has laid down a marker for those who are paying attention. By these actions he is, I repeat, unfit to hold office. I hope and expect that the voters will agree in November.
POINT: The Return of Louis Renault! Regular readers know that I periodically bestow the Louis Renault Award on political and other foolishness. Captain Renault is the character in Casa Blanca who tells Humphrey Bogart’s Rick he is “shocked, shocked” that gambling is occurring in Rick’s place. At that moment, one of Rick’s employees hands the Captain his gambling winnings, and Renault quickly tucks the bills away.
I was shocked, shocked! to learn that at the Democrat convention…I’ll let Fox News tell the story:
The backdrop for a Democratic National Convention tribute to U.S. military veterans was apparently a fleet of Russian warships.
The event occurred on the final night of last week’s convention when retired Adm. John Nathman paid tribute to veterans, in front of a gigantic screen that showed what appears to be ships from the Russian Federation Navy, according to The Navy Times…
‘The ships are definitely Russian,’ said author Norman Polmar, a naval and aviation expert. ‘There’s no question of that in my mind.
Democrats making a mistake about military hardware, even hardware as large as a warship? I’m shocked, shocked!
POINT: It’s About Time Department: Mitt Romney will apparently now begin receiving daily intelligence briefings. According to The Hill, this is a long time tradition.
Hmmm. You don’t suppose those nasty Republicans will use this information to criticize he foreign policy performance of He Who May Not Be Criticized? One can only hope.
POINT: From the invaluable Michael Barone, widely acknowledged as one of America’s premier political analysts:
Under settled principles of international law, attacks on diplomats by, or permitted by, governments can be considered acts of war. The threat of such attacks deserves a more stern response than a campaign trip to Vegas, a misstatement of settled policy and skipped intelligence briefings.
POINT: In the SMM “Some People Have No Sense of Irony (or Shame) Department”, we have this story from Fox News:
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – While local residents flooded the streets of Charlotte Monday ahead of the Democratic convention, union activists were trying to break down stereotypes and advance their cause by offering the public a chance to ‘hug a thug.’
The free hugs and ‘thank you cards’ at the ‘Hug-A-Thug’ booth in uptown Charlotte were part of several quirky features at this year’s Carolina Fest, an unofficial kickoff to the convention and a celebration on the side of Southern cuisine – pulled pork, sweet tea, fried pickles and all.
The North Carolina AFL-CIO, which ran the booth, said the set-up was meant to help crush the image of union members as ‘thugs’ – a misperception largely perpetuated by Republican lawmakers, they said.
‘We’re passing out free hugs to members of the public, reminding them that union members are hard-working Americans and we make America work just like they do,’ the group’s communications director, Jeremy Sprinkle, told FoxNews.com. ‘We’re saying have a free union hug, bust the myth about thugs and together we make America work.
Oh dear. Of course most union members aren’t thugs, but Americanus Unionae Thuggus is a highly recognizable indigenous species commonly seen not in the wild, but at any event unions might oppose. During the Obama era, outbreaks of these particularly brutal and dense animals—which tend to run in packs and have identical—often purple—plumage, have been particularly numerous and egregious.
Some people just aren’t capable of understanding irony, are they? Do they really think this will help? Sheesh!
POINT: From the “Still Relevant After All These Years” Department, we find the classic quote from Winston Churchill on the nature of the enemy of civilization, you know, the enemy the Obama Administration refuses to name? It was written in 1899 and young Winston was referring to the residents of the Sudan:
How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property – either as a child, a wife, or a concubine – must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen: all know how to die but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome.
The quote is provided through the good graces of my favorite Bookworm, whose writings are very much worth your time. Bookworm provides one additional quote that very well summarizes the kind of thinking any president should be doing. Of course, the current occupant of the White House is quite incapable of the kind of bravery and rationality that would be instrumental in saving the world forty years into the future.
Still, if you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed, if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not so costly, you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance for survival. There may be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no chance of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.
They that will not learn from history are truly doomed to repeat it.
POINT: Some Things Never Change Department: At Powerline, Scott Johnson takes a trip back to those thrilling days of yesteryear when American prestige and commerce were threatened by the Barbary pirates. Yes, they were Islamist. Note this quote from a report of the meeting between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams and the pirate warlord of Tripoli in London. Jefferson and Adams reported his words in a letter to John Jay:
It was…written in the Koran, that all Nations who should not have acknowledged their [the Musims’] authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon whoever they could find and to make Slaves of all they could take as prisoners, and that every Mussulman who should be slain in battle was sure to go to Paradise.
Sound familiar? If not, you really need to read a bit more, particularly here and other blogs dedicated to the truth, reality and the American way. By all means, read the whole thing.
