Moses Hogan is one of my favorite American composers.  A great pianist, composer and conductor, Hogan sadly died in 2003, but left a great legacy, not only of recorded works, but of choral music, specializing in spirituals.

Brilliant, meaningful music often brings me to tears, requiring enormous concentration to perform the music rather than getting caught up in it.  This is often the case with Hogan’s music.

For those who aren’t familiar with his works, here are two You Tube performances.  The first is “Hear my Prayer,” an absolutely beautiful anthem dedicated to Jester Hairston, and the second, “My Soul’s Been Anchored In The Lord,” a rousing spiritual.

These will surely do your soul good.
