Our gaffe-prone Vice president has done it again. Yes, the man who told us FDR went on TV for a fireside chat long before people had TV sets, the man who told a supporter in a wheelchair to “stand up so we can see you” has decided that the best weapon with which to protect our families and ourselves is–wait for it–the double barreled shotgun! That’s right, the best self defense weapon, far better than an AR-15 type carbine, is technology two centuries–or so–old.
One can only imagine what he’ll come up with next: the crossbow? A trebuchet?
For a relatively quick explication, stop by Gun Values Board for my most recent article on this topic. It may be worth your while.

A friend of mine that runs a local SWAT team brought his MP5/40 to the range for me to play with. After shooting it for a while it occurred to me that it was the perfect home defense weapon, especially for moms. No recoil to speak of, accurate, easy to shoot with ghost ring sight anyone could use etc. Also 30 rounds of 40 cal ammo should do the trick in most situations. All mom or dad need train the children to do is hit the deck when told to get down. Point the weapon at the threat and hold the trigger back, perhaps wiggling the mussel around a little. It’s a damn shame it’s illegal for any civilian to own.
Dear Phil:
With any weapon, particularly automatic weapons, precise aiming is essential. We must remember that we are absolutely responsible for each round we fire. Professionals fire subguns in 2-3 round, precisely aimed bursts, and always from the shoulder, which is actually faster than any other method of fire when properly done.
And you can own subguns, so long as they were manufactured prior to the ban in the late 80′s. Scarcity has, however, generally driven up their prices, and the recent gun ban unpleasantness will surely drive them even higher. Substantial Federal paperwork and intrusion is involved, as well as hundreds of dollars, but it can be done.
I know, I’m trained. I was being somewhat silly, but the fact is, the MP5 is a very easy weapon to shoot well and would be perfect for “mom” to use to defend the kids, but no mom or dad for that matter can have one. They came out after the ban. And here in the peoples republic of california, no one can have any sub gun, except perhaps for the likes of Sen Feinstein. Makes me long for my home town of Ft. Worth.
Dear Phil:
You live in the People’s Republic?! Oh, I’m so sorry… Hasn’t every Californian moved to Texas yet?
If it were not for the job…. The weather is beautiful, but the politics are ugly. I spend 15K a year to put my 2 kids in private catholic school to try and get the education we got in public school. I live in a million dollar neighborhood of track houses no different than the one I grew up in in Ft. Worth. The stories you hear about the Bay Area are true. Crime is rising as the illegal’s and other underclasses find it hard to find work. Home invasions, bank robberies etc. The elite overlords don’t want to hear about it and pretend it is not happening. However, from what my cop friends tell me, crime is coming soon to a neighborhood near said overlords, so perhaps there is hope yet. I won’t count on it.
